Georgia Tech Ready For Prime Time?

Georgia Tech opens the 2012 football season with a Monday night test at ACC rival Virginia Tech.

This weekend marks the beginning of the 2012-2013 college football season. And for all those Georgia Tech fans, what better way to cap off the opening weekend than a Labor Day prime time clash with ACC Coastal Division arch nemesis, Virginia Tech?

The Yellow Jackets will have to be ready to look the part on the road against a Virginia Tech team that is viewed by many as a nation championship contender. With nine starters returning to one of the nation's top defenses, Virginia Tech will have their hands full as they take on coach Paul Johnson’s notorious triple option offense.

Good news is the Yellow Jackets return 13 starters from last year’s team. Leading the swarm is quarterback Tevin Washington, who had a team-best 986 yards and 14 TDs in 2011. Figuratively speaking, I don’t think Washington is the greatest passer in the world, but he is great at running the triple-option offense, which ranked second in the nation last year in rushing.

The latest buzz (no pun intended) surrounding the game stems from rumors about Georgia Tech donning new honeycomb helmets for Monday night’s big game. Photos of the helmets have been circulating around the Internet the past few days, and I’ll have to say, they look really good and just might give the Yellow Jackets the mental boost they need on the road.

To say this game is important is an understatement. The winner of the Georgia Tech/Virginia Tech game over the past seven seasons has gone on to win the Coastal Division and advance to the conference championship game.

I think Georgia Tech can pull off the upset and beat the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va. if it capitalize on Virginia Tech’s mistakes. This game will be won on the defensive side of the ball and Georgia Tech must step up defensively to win.
