5 Home Staging Tips for Getting Your Home Sold in the Winter

Professional home stager, Kathy Nielsen shares helpful tips for homeowners that are bold enough to pursue selling during the winter months.

The following tips have been contributed by our resident expert in Home Staging, Kathy Nielsen, owner and principal home staging design stylist of Georgia Interior Solutions.

While selling your home at any time of the year can be stressful, there are several things a homeowner can and should do, to prepare their home for showings in the winter months ahead.

Light it up: With shorter days, it’s important to ensure the house is well lit. When you know you have a showing, ensure all lights are on. This includes ceiling lights, as well as all lamps.

Avoid an abundance of holiday décor: Instead of decorating for the holiday, decorate for the season. As we head into Thanksgiving,  consider adding rustic fall themed colors such as brown and orange.  In December switch it up to seasonal reds, greens and blues.

Turn it up:  The thermostat, that is. Your objective when selling is to ensure that prospective buyers lingers within your home. A cold house likely means the buyers are zipping through it to get back to a warm car. Set the thermostat to a comfortable level so that buyers feel warm and welcomed.

The nose knows: It is amazing how scents can have an impact on buyers. Aromas such as apple cider and cinnamon, simply evoke the smells of winter. To help create that aroma you can boil cinnamon sticks on the stove and add a bowl of potpourri to a side table.

Cozy it up: Dig out the throw blankets and drape it on a chair. Combine that with a book, and a mug of hot chocolate and you’ve created a visual environment that allows the prospective buyer to envision doing the same thing.
