3 Important Features You Should Check When Viewing Midtown Apartments

Finding the right Midtown apartments for a university student can be both exciting and stressful; it is something that you’ve prepared for and thought about for years.  Now that the time has come and you’re ready to move out on your own, there are many things you need to prepare for.  Finding the right apartment must be done with care since this will be your base of operations for the next few years; it will be where you will study, socialize, and relax, so it should be a place that you should find comfortable enough to embrace life there. So, when you begin looking at apartments, here are a few things you need to check for:

Security

Make sure that the unit has sufficient safety features; this includes not only having good locks on the doors and windows but also check for smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in each room.  Carbon monoxide poisoning is considered a silent killer, so make sure that the unit is equipped with a way to monitor exposure to these types of invisible threats too.

Plumbing

You also need to check the plumbing to make sure that everything is in good working order.  Look under sinks and other places where pipes run for potential leaks.  Water damage is easily identifiable; signs of water rings from leaks and mold and mildew will be easily seen in dark and enclosed places.  You also want to check the water pressure and the water heater to make sure it is sufficient for your needs.

Appliances

If the apartment comes with appliances make sure that all of them are in good condition.  Refrigerators should be able to keep a low enough temperature to keep the food safe and avoid spoilage; stoves should be working properly without any evidence of gas leaks.  Also, check heaters, furnaces, or air conditioning units to make sure that they have been serviced and working well, and make sure that the filters have been recently replaced.

Because there are so many details to check when you go through an apartment walk through, it is important that you don’t feel rushed.  One should never feel compelled to hurry through a viewing because you are worried about taking up the manager’s time; this is their job and it will be your home.  If you find yourself feeling pressured to quickly rush through a walk through take it as a warning that you should look for your Midtown apartment in a different location.
