UPDATED: 17 Fatalities Reported in Christmas Holiday Traffic

Foggy weather conditions considered one reason why fatalities up from just three a year ago.

Seventeen traffic deaths were reported during the 102-hour Christmas holiday travel period from Friday at 6 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, Christmas Day, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

There have been 685 crashes with about 300 injuries and 11 deaths investigated by the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). Other agencies have reported six traffic fatalities, including a fatal two-car collision in Smyrna just before midnight on Monday that claimed the life of a Marietta woman.

The fatalities count is much higher than in 2011, when three traffic deaths were reported. In 2011 there were 1,898 accidents with 693 injuries reported by all agencies.

Fatalities were reported in the following jurisdictions during the 2012 Christmas holiday travel period:

  • GSP Athens
  • GSP Gainesville
  • College Park Police
  • Smyrna Police
  • Cobb County Police
  • Newman Police
  • GSP Grovetown
  • Rockdale Sheriff's Office
  • GSP Sylvania
  • GSP Thomasville
