Police Chief Fires 6 Officers for Lying about Atlanta Eagle Raid

Nine other officers are disciplined.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner has disciplined several officers that unlawfully raided a Midtown gay bar.

Six Atlanta police officers were fired Friday for lying about what happened during the 2009 raid of , according to police spokesman Carlos Campos.

Turner disciplined nine other officers. Hearings for three officers are set for next week.

The police chief's actions follow the June 28 release of two reports that name officers who lied or destroyed evidence when questioned about the raid. 

“Honesty goes to the very heart of a police officer’s credibility,” Turner said Friday in a statement. "The public must be able to trust its police officers and expects them to tell the truth at all times.

"I hope my actions ... serve as a reminder to those men and women on the force that dishonesty simply will not be tolerated.”

Turner withdrew charges against two officers named in the report, Dimitiri Jacques and Vincent Marcano. The police chief could not confirm that the officers "actually made the allegedly untruthful statements," Campos said Friday in a release. 

Six Officers are Dismissed: Lt. Tony Crawford, Sgt. Willie Adams, Sgt. John Brock, Inv. Bennie Bridges, Officer Jeremy Edwards and Officer Cayenne Mayes were fired for violating APD's truthfulness policy.

Two other officers accused of lying -- James Menzoian and Brandon Jackson -- were fired previously for an unrelated incident. 

Major Retires before Demoted: Major Debra Williams, the commander of one of the units in the raid, retired the day before she was to be demoted to lieutenant. The demotion was , but it wasn't in effect until Thursday. 

Five Officers are Suspended: Sgt. Kelley Collier (20 days), Officer Robert C. Godwin (2 days), Officer Vincent Marcano (2 days), Inv. Timothy McClain (4 days) and Officer Marlon Noble (2 days).

Four Officers are Reprimanded: Officers Craig Condon, Christopher Dowd, Dion Meredith and William Walters were given written reprimands.

Three Officers set for Hearings: Inv. Jared Watkins, and officers Darnell Perry and Dimitri Jacques, will have disciplinary hearings next week.
