AK-47 Used in Midtown Robbery

Suspects produced weapons in Monday crime near Piedmont Avenue and 10th Street intersection.

Two men were robbed at gunpoint early Monday morning after exiting 5 Napkin Burger in Midtown. According to an Atlanta Police report, an AK-47 was pointed at the victims, who were robbed of their wallets among other items.

At approximately 2:24 a.m. on March 19, police responded to a pedestrian robbery that occurred at 990 Piedmont Avenue near 10th Street. One of the men robbed was identified as the manager at 5 Napkin Burger.

The victims reported that when they exited the restaurant, a dark colored SUV with a light colored bottom pulled up to them. The driver got out and pointed a pistol at them and said, “gimme all your money” according to the police report.

When one of the victims asked the suspect if he was serious, another suspect emerged from the vehicle with the AK-47, pointed it at the victims and said, “give it up.” At that time both victims handed over their wallets and one gave up his Metro PCS cellphone.

The suspects then left in the SUV, taking a right on 10th St. There were no injuries reported.

The first suspect was described as a heavy-set black male in his mid 20s, around 5-foot-7 in height, wearing black clothing and a dark and checkered bandana covering his face. The second suspect, with the AK47, also covered his face and no further description was offered in the police report.

The security tapes of the restaurant where the incident took place, according to police officials who reviewed the footage, show how the SUV pulled up the east side of Piedmont Ave. (in front of the former Outwrite bookstore), then backed up across three lanes to the west side of the street, stopped for a moment before making a left turn onto 10th Street.

About a minute later, footage showed the same vehicle crossing over three lanes to the east at a high rate of speed and then heading east on 10th St. The actual robbery took place outside of the camera's view and was therefore not recorded.

Very shortly after the incident, the suspects used one of the credit cards from the victims to purchase $64 in fuel at the Ponce de Leon Avenue and Monroe Drive Exxon. When police went to the Exxon to continue their investigation, the attendant on duty at that time did not have access to security camera footage. The investigation is ongoing.
