Midtown Delivery Driver Robbed at Gunpoint

APD releases crime stats for the first half of 2012, but they don't include recent Peachtree St. armed robbery where suspect reportedly told the victim, "Don't [expletive] with me or I will kill you."

This week the Atlanta Police Department released crime statistics for June and the first six months of the year. The good news is that Zone 5, which covers neighborhoods including Midtown, Ansley Park, Home Park, Georgia Tech, Atlantic Station, as well as downtown, saw no homicides through the first half of 2012.

The bad news is that Zone 5 larceny crimes, including car theft, property theft, shoplifting, purse snatching, pick-pocketing, etc., are the highest in the city’s six police zones.

Still, larcenies were down 11 percent in June compared with the same month in 2011, including down 31 percent for car theft.

Only the Buckhead-based Zone 2 has had fewer crimes against persons in the first six months, but on any given day, gun-wielding criminals are finding unsuspecting victims in and around Midtown. Two such incidents barely made the headlines in recent days.

On Tuesday, Aug. 6 around 7:30 p.m., an 18-year-old delivery driver for the Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches located at 1921 Peachtree Street was making a delivery near the Residence Inn by Marriott located at 1365 Peachtree. According to the police report, the victim mistakenly thought the suspect, described as a 5-foot-10 black male weighing approximately 250 pounds, as the individual he was supposed to be making the delivery to.

After exiting the vehicle, the victim was thrown against a wall where soon after  a black handgun was made visible by the suspect, who said, “Don’t [expletive] with me or I will kill you.”

The victim was reportedly robbed of $60, his cell phone and a GPS before the suspect fled on foot.

The second incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Aug. 3 near Pine and Luckie streets. According the APD, a female victim said she was approached by an armed suspect who wore a bandana over his face.

He demanded her purse and cell phone, which she gave up before the suspect, described as a black male, between the ages of 20-25 and standing about 5-foot-7, fled on foot.

Both incidents are being investigated by the APD. If anyone has any information regarding these or other criminal incidents, please contact Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477).
