Former Municipal Court Clerk Will Plead Guilty to Theft of Funds

The former Atlanta Municipal Court clerk is accused of pocketing $80,000 during a two-year period.

A former clerk with the City of Atlanta Municipal Court is expected to plead guilty to charges that she stole more than $80,000 in court fines, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office said.

Airiel Vrejean Wright has been charged with one count of fiduciary theft by taking for allegedly pocketing $81,292.35 from fines levied by the court. Between July 2010 and July 2012, she allegedly manipulated the municipal court's computer systems to accept payments that were less than the actual amount, so Wright could steal the rest.

After a customer complained about getting incorrect change back for a payment, an investigation revealed Wright's scheme and she was fired and arrested for her alleged misdeeds.

Wright is scheduled to enter her plea at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday in Fulton County Superior Court. She is expected to receive a sentence of one year in prison, ten years on probation, and will likely be ordered to repay the money she is accused of taking.
