Grenades found in Midtown prove to be inert

Pair of devices found near Home Park neighborhood on Saturday morning

A pair of hand grenades found near the Midtown neighborhood of Home Park on Saturday morning were not explosive, Atlanta Police Department officials said.

At approximately 10 a.m., APD received a call of a bomb threat at the intersection of Center Street at 10th Street. Upon arrival by officers, two suspicious devices were located.

According to Atlanta Police spokesperson Carlos Campos, a witness stated that while he was collecting metal from garbage cans in the area, he came across the devices in a clear plastic bin.

After a brief inspection, an officer noticed the two devices had the appearance of hand grenades. Supervisors were notified, as well as Homeland Security and S.W.A.T.

Surrounding streets were then closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic before S.W.A.T. determined the hand grenades to be inert and non-functional.
