Historic Craigie House Collapses in Midtown

No one was inside the historic building that is currently under renovation after being purchased last year.

The historic Craigie House that sits across from Piedmont Park collapsed late Wednesday night.

No one was inside the historic building that was built in 1911 and purchased last year by a couple who were in the process of having it renovated into a single-family residence.

After a day of significant ice accumulation, speculation is that the build up of the wintry mix may have led to the roof collapse, but investigators have yet to determine such.

The building, located at 1204 Piedmont Avenue, is the former location of Georgia's first chapter house of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) organization. The Atlanta Business Chronicle reported that it was sold last March, just two years after it was named a “place in peril” by The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.

There had been concerns from preservationists that the home would ultimately face the wrecking ball because it didn’t have any historic protections. But those concerns were eased after a Morningside couple purchased the home for a reported $350,000.

The house, which had not been designated as a local landmark by the Atlanta Urban Design Commission, was the second chapter of the DAR established in the country. Reportedly parts of the original Craigie House, which was the Massachusetts State building at the 1895 Cotton States Exposition, were moved to the site from Piedmont Park. The building was used by DAR until 1985 when it was damaged by a fallen tree.
