iPhone tracking device leads to arrests in Midtown armed robbery

Five female victims held up at gunpoint late Thursday night outside The Biltmore

According to the Atlanta Police Department, a pair of men were arrested overnight after robbing several women in Midtown of purses and electronics, including an iPhone that had a tracking device that led authorities to the thieves.

Shortly after 11 p.m. on Thursday evening, APD Zone 5 units responded to a pedestrian robbery call at The Biltmore, located at 817 West Peachtree Street. According to APD Officer Kim Jones, five female victims told the officers they had been robbed at gunpoint in the driveway of The Biltmore by two male suspects. Both suspects pointed guns at the victims, at sometime during the alleged incident, one of the victims punched one of the suspects in the face.

The suspects then fled on 5th Street towards Peachtree Street with purses and electronics in tow. It was at this point that the iPhone tracking device was activated and it was tracked first to Zone 4 and then Zone 1. The Georgia State Patrol Crime Suppression Unit and APD Zone 4 officers became involved and tracked the phone to the Marquis Townhomes located at 1660 Stanton Road in southwest Atlanta.

The two suspects were then detained, before the victims were brought to the scene for positive identification.

Demarcus Smith, 22, and Jermaine Johnson, 20, were both subsequently charged with armed robbery and taken to the Fulton County Jail. According to Officer Jones, this is an on-going investigation as there may be more possible suspects involved.

I'm sorry. It's time to start thinning the heard and bring back corporal punishment! If you don't get the message on the second arrest, third strike and you're out! I know that sounds harsh and one-sided, but DAMN how much does the rest of society have to put up with???
Chris H September 14, 2012 at 07:54 PM
Eye for an Eye. Cut off their hands and they can't hold a gun anymore.

The true problem is , we need the draft for these young misguided men, place them in the military where they get the much needed discipline, respect for other people's property etc. This is a time that this country MUST restart the mandatory requirement for ALL YOUTH BLACK, WHITE, BROWN whatever to serve at least 3 years in the military to learn to become a productive citizen in this country. Now if one elects not to conform to the military customs of life, then that's when we consider placing them into a more restrictive life style. Military Retired, YES and proud of it !!!! LED

so unemployment FORCES them to be thugs? somehow I knew this would be George Bush's fault ! thanks for figuring it out for us..

Not that it ultimately matters, but according to AJC's coverage of this incident, the victim allegedly punched one of the suspects in the face and not the opposite way as you are reporting. Which version are we to believe? If the AJC's version is indeed correct, then I hope that you have sincerely just made an honest error in your reporting. Otherwise, this style of negligent and manipulative reporting should be considered a journalistic travesty and a shameful attempt on your behalf to further sensationalize an already horrendous event. Given the current volatile climate with regards to crime here in Midtown, I don't think there is any need to add unnecessary fuel to the fire. Surely your publication can't be that desperate for readers. http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/5-robbed-at-biltmore-iphone-leads-to-suspects/nSBZq/

I agree that young black men are the bulk of the criminal offenders in Midtown and the greater Atlanta area. When you look at the "leadership" of APD, though, and Kasim Reed's total lack of concern about the sustained thug violence, we are not going to see any real change during Reed's tenure. It will only change once the decent white people who have moved back into town vote in a brave white mayor and we start to take the city back. Kasim and his black cronies sympathize more with black thugs and care more about their well being than they care about the hard-working white people who they should be protecting. We need to get the black "leadership" out and everyone who can vote in the city of Atlanta elections must make it their mission to get Reed's racist and negligent black ass out of office. PERIOD.

Amen, amen, amen, amen. This country would be better without them.

You are 100% right... It's not just Reed... It was Shirley Franklin, Bill Campbell, etc. etc. The guys who opened Vanquish (the club on 10th) which is predominantly black have had all kinds of problems including a shooting and several beatings at their previous clubs and should not have been given a license based on the law. They have side stepped almost every zoning rule in the book. I know for a fact that there's a picture of Shirley Franklin holding the owner's baby at some family function and she made sure that all license were fast tracked after most of the residents of midtown opposed the club. I've seen the woman in charge of liquor licenses drink at bars but never seen a check appear - hmmm.... And then there's Kwanza Hall.. OMG.. I wish I had a dollar for every time he's asked an attractive woman I know for their phone number to discuss 'city business' and 'how they can help him improve the city'. He even went up to my girlfriend, gave her his number and said, 'don't call 911 - call me if you ever are in an emergency as I can help you quicker'... Absolute truth. It's a racket and it's about time the residents of midtown had more control of their district.

Due in part to the jumbled wording of the APD release, a mistake was made in the original story as to who punched who during the robbery. A further examination of the initial release reveals that it was indeed a victim who hit a suspect, and not the other way around as originally reported here. This was a sincere honest reporting mistake and the editor along with Patch regrets the error. It has now been corrected. Thanks.

Wow. Young, black male criminals may be/are the problem, time and time again, for many reasons, but to blatantly turn it into white v. black in Midtown is a discredit to our very diverse community. Come on, people. and kudos to APD and the Find My iPhone app -- that is awesome!
John Sarine September 15, 2012 at 02:40 PM
It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. Hunt is truly a big man.
N.G. September 15, 2012 at 02:42 PM
Are you crazy? Honey, if you think your comment gets you the moral high ground you are very wrong. And if you think these black people are looking at for you and your children, you're living in la la land. And if you feel compelled to take me to task after you admit that young black males have limited your freedom in this city, then you deserve anything that happens to you or your family. And if you think a diverse city means 70% black thugs, then you need to do some traveling. And I'd wager that in the privacy of your own home and with close friends, you too talk about how much the black thugs have ruined this city. People and attitudes like yours will not make us any safer. If, in the face of blatant facts and the attack on your personal safety, you still want to assert "diversity" as more important than your safety, then you are seriously out to lunch lady.

Some worthless THUGZ off the streets...next time, just SHOOT THEM!!!
Aiden September 15, 2012 at 05:22 PM
Thank you for making the correction!
Aiden September 15, 2012 at 05:29 PM
First of all, your comment should be edited or removed for the implicit usage of offensive and inflammatory language. Secondly, your perspective is typical ethnocentricity at its finest...You've got decent, professional, people of ALL RACES trying to make Midtown a great place to live! There are thousands of Hispanics, Asians, Indians, and yes Black people within this community all working together to make this a better place. It doesn't matter if this person is a cashier at Publix, restaurant server, college student, UPS driver, construction worker, Law Enforcement, EMT, banker, or doctor, these people are all making positive contributions to our Midtown economy, safety, and way of life. Simply take a look around you. The majority of people within this city regardless of race do not commit violent street crimes or armed robberies. In equal towing, the majority of citizens within our community will never experience this sort of violent street crime. According to APD statistics, crime is down over the past year in Midtown Zone 5. Also, it certainly seems as if the criminals are being apprehended and prosecuted much faster, which is something to be thankful for. I consistently walk pass hundreds of black males in Midtown on a weekly basis and have never had a problem of any sort. I suspect most people's personal experience is much the same based upon my observations
N.G. September 15, 2012 at 06:40 PM
Aiden, If you're talking about my comment, I disagree that it should be removed. It is exactly how I feel and I do not retreat ONE BIT from every single word. I also disagree with your take on Midtown. Even assuming that 95% of the people are law-abiding, which I'll give you, the persistent and consistent violent crime is being committed by young black men. Why would I as a single white woman give any black man the benefit of the doubt when this is the fact? So I can end up like that prestigious science researcher who was killed in her condo in the Aqua building because she didn't want to offend the young black male who pretended to be interested in buying her unit so she refused a building escort and ended up alone with him . . and then he bashes in her head and kills her. Right. Exactly. you don't care about those stories, do you? Are you black or white? If you're black, your comments don't surprise me. You're all so offended by the truth. Too bad. If you're white, you're a too-liberal-for-your-own-good misguided moral elitist. Crime is sooooo out of control in Atlanta and you want to make the case that everyone needs to calm down. Take a walk buddy. And I don't FOR A SECOND believe APD's stats. And let's not forget that it's a department run by black men.
Chris H September 15, 2012 at 10:37 PM
Aiden, yes Midtown is very diverse with hard working, law abiding citizens. These thugs don't live here. They come from Boulevard and southwest Atlanta. This is a problem of low life outsiders. I think its up to residence to to call the police when thugs are cruising the streets at night. And yes, there is a difference between regular black people and thugs. It does work. I've called the police on many occations from criminals at cypress and 7th and have watched them get arrested. I don't hesitate to do it again.

It is high time that we consider innovative approaches to dealing with revolving-door criminals such as these. Singapore comes to mind - they make generous use of caning. They do it very professionally - they have a medical doctor on hand to confirm physical fitness, the corporal punishment technician takes measures to prevent injury to the kidneys (with a thick pad to cover the lower back), and the defendant can even allow his mom or someone else to be on hand to comfort them. It is done very professionally, and not in a barbaric manner as some folks imagine. I bet that if they get caned once, they'll get caned no more... Here is a video on what that looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBE7p5gDNe4 - Singapore carries it out in even a more professional manner than this...
Jack September 16, 2012 at 06:59 PM
If someone looks suspicious...just call the police with your iPhone instead of having the police get it back after a YBM takes it.
Ben Boyden September 16, 2012 at 11:09 PM
I agree with these comments, this city is well on its way to becoming the Detroit of the South. Kareem and his band of idiots must be voted out of office.
Loretta September 19, 2012 at 08:49 PM
How did this become a race thing? Thieves come in every color. The real problem is that Judges don't punish these criminals. Judges just slap them on the hand and let them go. Parole Boards just let them out early on "good behavior". Until children start to see people actually being punished for breaking the law they feel they can do whatever they want and get away with it.....the sad part is that is true.
Atl Resident September 26, 2012 at 09:41 PM
No race card here, but the reality is that 99.9% of mugging and robbery crimes are committed by younger black kids!
Atl Resident September 26, 2012 at 09:42 PM
meant crimes in the Midtown are.....
Atl Resident September 26, 2012 at 09:45 PM
who is that punk Melvin?
Chris H September 26, 2012 at 09:45 PM
Do you honestly think anyone here will understand those jumbled up words of nonsense? I had to read it about 8 times to try and figure it out. So you are sticking up for your Uncle even though he robbed a group of women?
Chris H September 26, 2012 at 09:47 PM
I think Melvin is the nephew of Demarcus Smith, one of guys caught in the robbery. He seems like a really sharp guy, doesn't he?
Anna Varela September 26, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Folks, I have removed some comments due to their use of the f-word and other language that was over the line. Obviously there's a lot of concern about public safety in Midtown, but there's no reason we can't keep the discussion civil. Thanks
