Jury selection underway in Midtown Proscenium building shooting spree case

Nkosi Thandiwe is charged with killing one woman and paralyzing another in the July 2011 shooting in a Midtown parking garage.

Jury selection is underway in the trial of the security guard accused of the July 2011 Midtown shooting spree that killed one woman and left another paralyzed.

Patch was in Judge Kelly A. Lee’s Fulton County Superior Courtroom Monday morning as defense lawyers for Nkosi Thandiwe, 23, and Fulton Assistant District Attorney Linda Dunikoski questioned 60 potential jurors. During the lunch recess, attorneys involved declined to comment as the selection process was to continue throughout the afternoon.

In November 2011, Thandiwe pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges connected to the July 15, 2011 triple shooting spree at the Proscenium building that left Roswell's Brittney Watts dead at the scene and Lauren Garcia paralyzed.

Tiffany Ferenczy was also shot in the leg during the shooting that resulted in prosecutors charging Thandiwe with felony murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, armed robbery, hijacking a car, aggravated battery and gun possession during the commission of a felony.

Lee ordered in November 2011 that Thandiwe undergo a mental evaluation. In April 2012, the judge ruled that the accused shooter was capable of comprehending what was happening during a trial.

Police say Thandiwe, who was a security guard for Allied Barton Security Services at the Proscenium building where all three women worked, shot Watts in the neck in the building’s parking deck, and then fled the garage in her car, shooting the other two women as he exited onto Crescent Avenue.

The defendant reportedly bought the Glock semi-automatic handgun that was used in the shootings just over two weeks before the incident.

Thandiwe remains in the Fulton County Jail without bond.
