Man in critical condition after early morning shooting near Midtown

Victim reportedly shot twice while returning to vehicle parked in apartment complex off North Avenue.

A 22-year-old man is reportedly in critical condition at Grady Memorial Hospital after being attacked and shot in a parking lot near Midtown early Thursday morning.

According to Atlanta Police spokesperson Kim Jones, at around 12:40 a.m. two men were looking for their car parked at the Cityscape at Midtown apartments when they were approached by two men. During what authorities say was a robbery attempt, the victim was shot once in the upper chest and once in the left arm.

The other man was not injured and neither man lived at the apartments, which are located at 300 Cityline Avenue near the intersection of North Avenue and Central Park.

It is not known whether or not anything was taken during the crime. According to police, witnesses reported seeing two black males fleeing from the scene after the shots were fired.

Were the victims white?

Let's hope the victim recovers or we are looking at 3 murders in the space of several months within a few block radius. I wonder what it will take to get the Atlanta city gov't off its ass and doing something serious about the violent crime issue in the city. Maybe it will take some pressure from Jamestown properties (redeveloping city hall east nearby ) to get the Mayor to care. At this pace the violent crime rate in Atlanta may finish up as one of the top 3 worst in the nation. [btw this technically wasn't in Midtown either]

There is no indication from the APD as to the race of the victims. Also, the article states in the headline and story body that it happened "near" Midtown.

Regardless of the victims race, our black youth is in serious, serious trouble. Maybe a tipping point into a permanent loss at this point in time. Globalism will only get more profound leaving these men behind forever. The timeline seems to be - teen birth, poverty, desperation, violent crime, prison or six feet under then repeat. Anyway, who won American Idol last night?

We can catch the city council members at their respective banks cashing their newly printed 52% pay raise checks. Shameful!

Unfortunately 99 percent of the midtown crimes are committed by black individuals. They have been know to attack black people as well, although most of the victims are white. Everyone should keep an eye out for "Suspicious" black people in the neighborhood. Key word being suspicious; pants on the ground, two or more in an parked vehicle. There are a lot a decent black people, but the reality is that these cowards happen to be black. Even if they are not selling drugs and you just think they are call APD right away... Give them a description and the police will have a right to search them... The cops in Miami are prone to harass these characters a lot more because Cuban cops are certainly not racist and do not care if someone plays the race card, they are just very straight forward. In Atlanta APD does a fine job, but they have to be careful because in this city everyone uses the race card... How Pathetic!

The victims (2 white males) were walking down North Ave from a bar when they were robbed. The suspect made the victims strip down to their boxers for some unknown reason. The victim who was shot broke through the Cityscape pedestrian gate to try to get away and ran through the complex where he was shot on the top of the parking deck by the suspect who was chasing him. The suspect then fled the complex and the victim ran behind building 3 where he was found ...

I just hope during this Christmas season that all black males cease and desist the terror, robbery, murder, and general mayhem and think of their Grandmothers or mamaugh. Watch this maybe just maybe it will settle your soul. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPBvSBRaLfo

Some of you folks should attend a day of court hearings. You'd find out that most crime here is black-on-black, by far. Go to bond hearings: the black folks in the courtroom aren't there to support those arrested; they are family members trying to keep them in (jail)! The cops can only do so much- if there was an officer on every street corner, the (usual) perps would ambush people in the back entrances. Lenient judges have a lot to do with the problem, so does the number of kids having babies themselves.

One took off shirt to give to the victim to hold on his wound

I will be curious to see the towns' of residence of the perps, should they be caught. It still seems to me the majority of the predators come into town from the hinterlands, just like the bar crawlers.

Maybe if small amounts of marijuana were legalized, violent criminals could actually take the place of petty drug offenders in the prison system. My house was broken into by armed burglars, they were actually caught (thanks APD), and were back on the street within a month.

See this is what happens to Atlanta when you tear down all the housing projects Techwood homes, Carver homes etc and give the people vouchers to live anywhere they choose now you have an intermix of these low income families mixed in the rest of soceity. But the stupid Housing Authority did not teach the families with the vouchers now you are in regular society you can not just rob, steal and kill at will in the community you live in anymore, you are not in the projects anymore, that was okay there when you wanted to kill off each other when you were in the project but now you must act as civilized in soceity. Some these families have generations of thugs & ignorance past down & now with the voucher they can live right next to you or in your community and now they rome thru these communities & just pick there viticms, lately it seems that they are picking the communities that they know are a easy target now you see what hard working educated Afr Amer go thru everyday in a black community I guess we are just suppose to get along with the killers & robbers because of our skin color. Hell before the vouchers you knew not to travel near certain housing projects now they maybe your neighbor & live right next to you in your high-rise condo if the owner wants a steady income. Now you see how it feels to see death & destruction in your own community or near your community & can not do anything about it. Just a taste what people have been dealing with for years my caucasian friends.

Too many guns on the streets. Too few opportunities, too little hope. What can be done?

My step son is still in the hospital after 6 surgeries. He made it thru all of this which was surprising with the life threatening incident. He finally made it out of ICU but cannot return home on the plane because of his injuries. He will have to wait 2 weeks. He will miss Christmas with part of his family. His medical bills are way over a million dollars, mother and father have lost wages and had to pay hotel and food. Now he will have to figure out were to stay for two weeks until he can travel. This is all because of a thug who thought a 22 yr old had money. This is a devistating Christmas medically and financially for the whole family. To the Thug who did this only you and God will decide your fate. That day will come. Merry Christmas!!!

Dear Stepmom: My heart goes out to you, your husband, & especially your son. I called 911 that night after hearing your son screaming for help & moaning in pain. I never knew who was injured but emailed the news because his story was not told on the news & I wanted to know that he survived. I have prayed every night for this 22 year old stranger. I will continue to pray. I wish I had the resources to help. I truly hope you will have better news to come your way & that your family & your son heal completely. God Bless.

To Stepmom, I am a black male in Atlanta and I want to apologize to you on their behalf. I have been in ICU before for a stabbing when I was 17. I can sympathize with his pain. The majority of us here are well educated, family oriented, and hard working. I have worked on many large scale construction projects in Midtown, Downtown, and Buckhead. Unfortunately, I have been robbed too...by a black male. I am not sure that race is the issue although the perpetrators are black. The issue is economic. The unemployment rate for blacks is more than twice that of whites in Atlanta. I'm not quoting any stats; I'm going by what I am seeing. We need to get black non-skilled people back to work. Lack of marketable skills and/or education and having a criminal history is preventing many from obtaining employment today. Did society really think that recording a crime on a person's history for the rest of their life would make it better for the rest of us? We may as well go back to branding them. There is now a large population of low wage non-skilled labor that cannot get employment any other way. The low wage, non-skilled jobs are just not available here anymore; such as factory work. Even in the skilled positions there is inequality here. I am the first to get laid off and the last to get called back; and they always say my work performance is stellar. I have noticed this for the past 7 years working here in Atlanta. Go figure...

Michael, Thank you for responding. My step son is recovering but still in Georgia unable to come home due to his extensive injuries and finances. It has been hard on our family. He will not make it home for Christmas because it costs $1500.00 to ride a train home since he is unable to fly in an airplane due to the cabin pressure. He has had 6 vascular surgeries that will not allow him on a plane. I am sorry that our society has not educated themselves and their children in explaining that diversity is good and color does not matter. What matters is what is in your heart and sole. I am blonde haired blue eye and had a father that grew up in Alabama. He was very prejudice. While growing up next to a Army base it was a mixed culture. My best friend April was black and I did not know there was a difference. All I knew is I loved my best friend. Unfortunetly, some of the well educated people whom are hiring for a position do not see the marketable well educated individual by how educated they are but by the color of the skin. These individuals are the uneducated business owners that need to open their eyes and bring our country together. I hope the best for you. Have a Merry Christmas and God bless you and your family.
