Metro Atlanta Ranks 6th Among Most Dangerous Cities on Forbes' List

Metro Atlanta as a whole ranks sixth among the most dangerous cities. Atlanta has increasingly become perceived as a drug trafficking hub.

Crime is always a concern for people living in and around a large city. How safe do you feel in Atlanta? According to the 2012 list of America's most dangerous cities run in Forbes Magazine and reported by the FBI's Uniform Crime database, Atlanta's crime rate puts it high on a list of cities with the most crime in the nation.

1. Detroit with 2,137 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

2. St. Louis with 1,857 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

3. Oakland with 1,683 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

4. Memphis with 1,583 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

5. Birmingham with 1,483 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

The statistics are done shoddily. Atlanta has a far more disproportionate commuter swell than the other cities (swelling up to 150% it's nighttime population during each work day). You have to look at the number of people at the time of the incident, not incidents/residents to get a useful picture of crime in a place. The article as stands is worse than useless, and the editor and fact checker who worked on it should be disciplined/fired.

A resident is a resident no? Whereas a commuter is a commuter and not counted in the per capita numbers. In any event I don't really see what you are getting at, given that most crimes occur in evening hours are you saying Atlanta's crime rate is actually much higher?
