Body discovered behind Morningside Baptist Church

Foul play not initially suspected as an off-duty police officer discovers the body near the church located in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood.

A body was located behind Morningside Baptist Church early Tuesday evening.

According to Atlanta police spokesperson John Chafee, an off-duty police officer was walking his dog in the vicinity of the church around 6 p.m. when he happened upon the body between a residential area and the church.

The church is located at 1700 Piedmont Avenue in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood.

The body was in a state of advanced decomposition and there were no immediate signs of foul play according to an early investigation by Homicide Unit detectives.

An autopsy will be performed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death.
