UPDATED: Peachtree Street Re-Opens, Suspicious Package Determined Safe

Nearby Starbucks evacuated after package found outside on sidewalk.

Update: Around 9:30 a.m., police re-opened Peachtree Street. "There was nothing in it," Officer Kim Jones, spokeswoman for the Atlanta Police Department, said about the suspicious package found outside Starbucks Monday morning. The police and fire departments, as well as SWAT and bomb squads were on scene. A robot was used to X-ray the package.

Atlanta police have closed Peachtree Street, from 6th to 8th streets, to investigate a suspicious package.

Monday morning, a small white package with a cross on it was found on the sidewalk outside the Starbucks at Peachtree and 7th streets, said employee Jeff Polston. The Starbucks was evacuated around 7:30 a.m.

"It's something wrapped in a white material," said Kyle Ansley, who also works at Starbucks. "Some people said it's been there since yesterday."

Around 8:30 a.m.,  about seven employees sat at the corner of Peachtree and 6th streets. Some were not too concerned about the package.

"This has become common," Polston said. "But I'd rather them be safe then just ignore it."
