Police Impersonator Attempts Home Park Residence Invasion

Armed man bangs on front door while saying, "Police, let me in."

A man impersonating a police officer attempted to force his way into a Home Park neighborhood residence this week.

According to Atlanta Police spokesman Sgt. Curtis Davenport, the failed home invasion attempt happened about 2 a.m. Wednesday on Hampton Street.

A female Georgia Tech student told police that a black male wearing a black shirt with “Police” on the front of it began pounding on the front door. According to Davenport, the suspect said, “Police, let me in.”

The woman opened the door and “observed the person with a firearm in hand and point it at her as he attempted to make his way inside the residence,” said Davenport. The resident forced the door closed and locked it as she heard the suspect say, “Go check the back.”

The suspect then left the location without further incident. The resident stated she only opened the door because the police were at her residence earlier to serve a warrant on an ex-roommate.

It marked the second time in April that an armed gunman had targeted a Tech student in the neighborhood that is just north of the school campus.

According to police, on April 9 a student was walking near Richards and Mecaslin streets when two men approached him from the rear. The men, who were described by police as black and in their 20s, pointed handguns at the victim before robbing him of his belongings and fleeing on foot.

In both incidents, there were no serious injuries.
