Midtown safety advocates vow to monitor court case of man arrested for burglary last week.

Local safety advocates say they'll keep a close eye on the court case of a man who was arrested last week in Midtown.

On June 8, Atlanta police arrested Dane Barry Coleman for allegedly burglarizing a home on 4th Street.

The incident occurred around 7 a.m. The homeowner had opened his back door to let his cats out at 6:30 a.m. and fell back to sleep on the couch in the living room, according to police reports.

Coleman is being held at  on a $25,000 bond.

"We want to very proactively court watch this guy," Steve Gower, vice president of the Midtown Ponce Security Alliance, said in an email. Alliance members plan to monitor Coleman's case through the Fulton County Court Watch program.

The alliance reported June 9 that Coleman has an "extensive criminal history."

In Jan. 2010, police arrested Coleman in Midtown after a resident on Vedado Way reported a suspicious person in the neighborhood. Coleman was charged with six counts of auto theft, cocaine possession and other crimes.

Records from the Fulton County Sheriff's office and the Georgia Department of Corrections show Coleman has been arrested in other jurisdictions.

"Coleman clearly exemplifies the necessity of a court watch program as a strategy to protect the community, and we are working with community prosecutor Sharla Jackson to arrange a proactive court watch effort," the alliance said in its report.
