Possible Street Car Racing Leads to Downed Light Pole and Crash Along Peachtree

The Atlanta Police Department has confirmed that early Thursday morning, officers were alerted to an, "auto accident/hit and run near the intersection of Peachtree and Ponce de Leon."

Responding Officer T. Cone says that he discovered that the driver, 27 year-old Jacob Simmons "struck a street lamp at the location and the fled the scene."

According to the police narrative,  "Mr. Simmons was found at 630 Williams Street where it was discovered that he was Driving While Under the Influence of Alcohol and was charged accordingly."

The 27 year-old suspect initially told police that he did not hit the street lamp along Peachtree, but officers found the front bumper with his TAG number at the scene and the rest of the Jeep Cherokee with him at 630 Williams Street.

Officers say that, "Mr. Simmons did admit to rear-ending another vehicle, however no vehicle was found and no calls were made to 911 dispatch in reference to an auto accident where a vehicle was rear-ended."

Witnesses told WSB that, "the Jeep hit a tree, bounced off a brick wall and then smashed into the light pole."

No one was seriously hurt, and the damage to the road and sidewalk has not been accounted for.
