Report: Midtown Shooting Victim is Paralyzed

A 23-year-old woman has a spinal cord injury following a triple shooting in Midtown last week.

Lauren Garcia was one of three women shot Friday at the parking garage of the Proscenium building. 

Police say a  at the building is responsible for the attack that killed one woman at Crescent Avenue and 14th Street. 

Nkosi Thandiwe, 22, is charged with murder in the death of Brittney Watts, 26, and two counts of aggravated assault in the shootings of Garcia and Tiffany Ferenczy, 24. 

Watts was on Tuesday.

A recent graduate of the University of Georgia, Garcia was about a month into her summer internship at communications firm MSLGroup, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She was shot in the back during Friday's incident and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. 

On Thursday, Garcia was transferred to the intensive care unit at the Shepherd Center in Buckhead for a spinal cord injury, according to spokeswoman Caroline Hemingway.

"After doctors at Shepherd Center determine an appropriate treatment plan for Ms. Garcia, she will begin a rehabilitation program under the guidance of a full team of medical and rehabilitation specialists," Hemingway said in a statement Thursday. 

"The family is appreciative for the outpouring of support from the community, but requests privacy during Ms. Garcia’s recovery and rehabilitation," she said. 

A spokesman at MSLGroup couldn't discuss the woman's condition but said the firm would help Garcia's family.

"There will be things we are doing for the family now and going forward," Mike Bush said Thursday.

Police say they have not established a motive for the shooting. 

“At this point in our investigation we have not established any connection between the subject and any of the victims, other than the fact they worked in the same building," police spokesman Carlos Campos said Wednesday in a statement.

Police said Friday the victim might have been the target of a disgruntled co-worker. Officials at the Proscenium office tower have told tenants they think the attack was random.

News reports reveal that Thandiwe bought the gun used in the attack at the end of June. He passed required background screenings to purchase the Glock semi-automatic pistol, the AJC reported.

Earlier this week, the security firm where Thandiwe worked  of The Proscenium building that Thandiwe passed criminal background checks when he was hired. Allied Barton Security Services told tenants that the guard had good references, a college education and that he "was in good standing with Allied."

Security at the building has since the shooting.

A police spokesman said Thandiwe turned himself in Friday afternoon after realizing police had identified him.

Thandiwe  to appear before a Fulton County magistrate on Saturday. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 29 at the Fulton County Courthouse in downtown Atlanta.
