Shortly before 4 a.m. on the day in question, Ballard and a friend were walking through the park when they were approached by two men, one of whom shot Ballard in the chest. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

After Atlanta police had identified Woods as a suspect, the department began working with the U.S. Marshall’s task force to locate him.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident Thursday morning and is being held at the Aiken County Jail, where he is awaiting extradition to Atlanta according to Chafee.
