Tech students robbed at gunpoint Thursday morning

Victims robbed of their phones and Macbooks as they left the campus library.

Armed gunmen robbed a pair of students early Thursday morning as they left the campus library.

According to the Georgia Tech police report, at around 2:45 a.m., a white van approached the students as they were attempting to enter their vehicle that was parked near the intersection of Bobby Dodd Way and Fowler Street.

Two men emerged from the van, whereupon one suspect pulled a gun and reportedly told the students to drop their backbacks. The suspects then took from the students their cell phones and backpacks, which each contained a Macbook laptop valued between $1,500 and $2,000 according to the campus police incident report.

The robbers also took one of the student’s purse and with it a Bank of America debit card and $50 in cash. The suspects then left in the van heading down Bobby Dodd Way. There were no injuries reported.

The suspects were described as  “black males approximately six feet in height with low haircuts” according to the report. The gunman was described as being in his early 20s and weighing 150 pounds. The other suspect was described as being in his early to mid-20s.

“We work continuously to improve campus safety and security of our students through enhanced technology, ongoing education and the active involvement of our police force,’’ said Georgia Tech spokesman Matt Nagel on Thursday afternoon.

“In addition, Georgia Tech continues to partner with the Atlanta Police Department to deter crime in the areas surrounding campus. Students have been alerted to the investigation and asked to take precautions to report any suspicious behavior to the Georgia Tech Police Department at 404-894-2500.”
