Two Midtown Pedestrians Struck by Car at 8th Street on Sunday

As the end of the rainy 4th of July weekend came to an end, two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Peachtree and 8th street on Sunday evening.

Reports from the scene indicate that the driver may have run the red light due to texting while driving.  There is limited information from the Atlanta Police Department, says Officer Jones, because the, "victims were transported from the scene before police arrived."

Both victims are said to be adults, there condition is still unknown at the time.

Social Media responded immediately to the crash as it always does, and here is an excerpt from a Facebook feed sent to us by a reader, Steve Gower. (some of the names below have been hidden)

Patti E.: Two people just got hit on Peachtree in front of Metropolis.... Seems like they were walking out of the restaurant and just kept walking... the car on Peachtree heading North just did not see them. Seems like they were not in the crosswalk. PEOPLE.. CARS CAN KILL YOU. My greatest fear living in town is hitting someone. People walk in front of cars with no fear.....

Lynn B. OHGosh...hope they aren't seriously injured.

Alan A: Yes Patti... the guy ran the red light.. I think that they are going to be okay according to the ambulance driver

Matthew P: Have you seen some of the idiots that walk across the street thinking they are entitled or just don't care??? I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.vor 31 Minuten via Handy · Gefällt mir · 2

Brian Y: Scary, sad and I hope they are okay - but folks need to take a tutorial on speeding metal vs. the human body. Also "walk" and "don't walk". I almost clipped 3 yesterday. Brakes can only help so much...

Alan A: Matthew... I feel your pain... but this guy was texting and ran a red light..... not the same... watched it happen....

Brian Y: And running a red light is not cool either...

Matthew P: Well there are always different situations in this case it was the driver that was being irresponsible.

Steve Gower: I am surprised one of those panhandlers at Ponce & Monroe hasn't gotten hit yet, especially the one that crosses Ponce diagonally through that intersection.

Alan A: People.... really?

Patti E: Alan.. how did you find out he was texting?

Alan A: 1- I was standing there watching... I saw the car hit... the two go up in the air.. and their heads hit the windshield.... I just finished giving a statement....

Patti E: OMG... that is scary that you saw that.

Luci G: Oh, Alan Avery, so sad for you! Hope they are going to be okay! People DO NOT test and drive!!!! PLEASE.vor 11 Minuten · Gefällt mir

Alan A: I was really close to you evidently... and yes.. it was crazy....

Barbara S: That's so scary. I walk over to Piedmont Park with the dogs everyday. I NEVER cross 10th until I know people are really going to stop. You'd be amazed how many people are texting or just not even paying any attention while they're driving.

Alan A: I am a little traumatized ... I think I will go around the corner... have several drinks and call a cab..... not sure I want to drive anyway.... geez....

Patti E: Also at 10th... the car closet to you can stop but not the one on the other side. I see people walking their dogs with the dog ahead leash out and I am so scared a car will not stop... Oh Lord I am getting a wreck just thinking about this....

Brian Y: All very sad. I think for us that live right around the area, it's easy for us to assume that it was the other way around. We see pedestrians not paying attention so much more often than people running red lights. And I agree Alan, go have a few cocktails and taxi it home. You deserve it...

Barbara S: I know Patti. We all just need to be more aware as drivers and as pedestrians.

Alan A: Well aright then... xxoo to you Patti.. hope to see you soon... I am turning my phone off... going to try and forget this... I guess until court... why did I have to be in Midtown at this time...
