Atlanta City Councilmember Wants Statewide Drone Regulations

Councilman Ivory Young has introduced a proposal to ask state lawmakers to introduce guidelines for drone use in Georgia.

A member of the Atlanta City Council has drafted a piece of "proactive" legislation that will ask Georgia lawmakers to create clear guidelines and regulations for the operation of drones in the state.

According to WSB-TV, Councilman Ivory Young wants to protect the rights of Georgians by asking legislators to introduce regulations on unmanned aerial vehicles, commonly known as drones, especially drones that can carry recording equipment.

Currently, there are no state codes for drone use and operation, and a business in Cumming is seeing profitable business from selling drones to ordinary citizens, including members of the agricultural and film industries.

Young is concerned about law enforcement use of drones; he told CBS 46 and WSB-TV that he hopes to draft laws that will regulate law enforcement use of drones before law enforcement actually possesses said drones, to prevent any violations before they can occur.

Representatives from civil liberties organizations such as the ACLU met with Young and his fellow council members on Wednesday to share their concerns about drones and law enforcement.

It is not known when the Atlanta City Council will vote on Young's proposal.
