Georgia State, Developers Eye Turner Field

GSU is one of the suitors proposing to purchase the approximate 80-acre site when the Braves depart for Cobb County in 2017.

On Wednesday, Georgia State University and a local development firm team outlined their vision to acquire Turner Field and the surrounding parking lots in order to create a new southern campus and a $300 million mixed-use development.

According to a report from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the downtown university would like to convert Turner Field into a 30,000-seat football, soccer and track-and-field stadium, plus build and a new baseball park and academic buildings to go along with green space.

Midtown-based real estate developer Carter, along with Atlanta-based developer Columbia Residential, would construct a mixed-use of shops, restaurants, retail and single-family and market-rate apartment homes. The project would add possibly 1,200 beds for GSU students and much-needed parking, as well.

GSU is one of the suitors proposing to purchase the approximate 80-acre site when the Braves depart for Cobb County in 2017. The City of Atlanta has said it is ready to act on development proposals, but is still waiting on the Braves to let the city know if they will exercise an option to extend their lease.

The lease permits the baseball club to have until Jan. 1, 2016, to give notice of whether it will exercise its five-year option.
