NPU-E, transportation referendum meetings set for Tuesday

The June Neighborhood Planning Unit-E meeting is set for Tuesday, June 5 at Peachtree Christian Church located at 1580 Peachtree Street. NPU-E serves Midtown, Ansley Park, Atlantic Station, Home Park, Georgia Tech and West Midtown.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. The volunteer board of elected community leaders make recommendations to the city on voting issues including zoning and permit applications.

Organizers must acquire permits in order to hold festivals and other large gatherings in the city. Events with at least 250 people require a special event permit, which is issued from Mayor Kasim Reed’s office. Events with less than 250 people must acquire a “large gathering” permit, which is issued by the city’s parks department

NPU-E reviews the permits but can only make recommendations on whether they’re approved or denied. The city doesn’t require that organizers consult neighborhoods directly impacted by the events.

Also on Tuesday evening, the City of Atlanta will host a Regional Transportation Referendum Open House at City Hall from 6 to 8 p.m. Officials will present the project draft list and gather public input.

A brief overview of the referendum process and the 85 percent regional list will be included as part of the session.

On July 31, voters within the ten-county Atlanta metropolitan area will decide whether to fund transportation and infrastructure projects through a regional transportation referendum. If it passes, it is estimated that $7.2 billion will be invested over a ten-year period across the metropolitan region with 15 percent going directly municipalities.

The City of Atlanta is expected to receive more than $9 million every year for ten years, or about $94 million total dedicated for local projects. Over the last several months, the Mayor’s Office, Department of Planning & Community Development and Department of Public Works, in coordination with Atlanta residents and the Atlanta City Council, have developed a draft list of projects.

Among the referendum transit projects approved last fall by the Atlanta Region TIA Roundtable that would affect Midtown and West Midtown include:

The panelists include Mark Toro, Managing Partner, North American Properties; Dave Williams, Vice President of Transportation, Metro Atlanta Chamber; and Debbie Dooley, National Coordinator, Tea Party Patriots. Catherine Ross who chairs the Center for Quality Growth & Regional Development at Georgia Tech, will serve as the moderator.
