Tamah Vanderhorst, a New Orleans native, created a successful
business by combining her lifelong love of accessories with her ambition of being a successful entrepreneur. Obsessories Inc. is your one stop shop for fashion pieces giving you the complete look you need. Vandhorst has a “great eye” for accessorizing often avant garde in her approach her customers always leave satisfied. Vandhorst approach to her business is unique because she comes to you. She believes that personal touch makes the difference. Vandahorst answers five important questions about Obsessories Inc.

How did you get started in this business? My love for accessorizing started it all. Earrings are my favorite! And I would always get stopped and complimented on my earrings and other jewelry pieces. So I figured I could be a walking billboard. I did some research on wholesale/resale and found it lucrative and gave it a try. I always knew I wanted to work for myself but I had no idea it would be this. I absolutely love it!

Who are your customers? My customers are mostly women. They range from teenagers to grandmas. I get a few male pieces from time to time and am looking to branch out more to a male market.

What are the most crucial things you have done to grow your
business? What plans do you have now to expand your business further?

The most crucial thing I did was quit my job to work my business full time. I believe you get out of something what you put into it. So I wanted to put my all into my “baby”. I plan to work with some designers and manufacturers to have my own line in various stores. I also hope to have another line for direct sales in the hopes of empowering others to be their own boss.

What three pieces of advice would you offer entrepreneurs starting out today?

START a lot of time people procrastinate for various reasons. I believe starting anything is the hardest part. You have to start somewhere, even if it’s just research.

PRESEVERE it will get rough especially in the beginning. You have to have tenacity and endurance to keep going. Don’t ever give up. If you can believe it, you can see it and you can do it!

Be PASSIONATE about whatever it is you’re doing. I believe if you can turn your passion into profit you don’t have to work.

How does your business “give back” to the community or to society?

Obsessories Inc participates in career days; speaking to students about the
importance of education, giving back and entrepreneurship. I am looking forward
to participating in the Read Aloud program reading to kids. I want to sponsor a school supply, toy, and clothing drives. Giving back is very important to mea and I want to do so as much as I can.
