Fidelity to move into vacated Midtown bank

Bank plans to open a new branch at the 3,700 square-foot building located at the corner of Monroe and Ponce de Leon sometime in 2013.

The long-vacant bank space at the corner of Monroe Drive and Ponce de Leon Avenue will be back in the banking business in 2013.

An applicant representing Fidelty Bank filed a Special Administrative Permit (SAP) with the City of Atlanta on Thursday, and the bank plans to open a new branch at the 3,700 square-foot building sometime this year.

The building, located at 494 Ponce de Leon, was originally constructed in 1976 and sits on a 0.96-acre property that fronts both Monroe and Ponce. The property is zoned C-2 within the Atlanta BeltLine Overlay District.

The building was the former home of SouthTrust Bank.

Wachovia did not relocate to the 999 Peachtree it always had a branch there. Before taking over First Union 999 Peachtree was First Unions headquarters. Wachovia closed down the location when they absorbed SouthTrust.

It will be great to have an on-site steward of this prominent piece of property again. Someone who will push CBS Outdoor Advertising to keep the MARTA shelter in front cleaned on a more regular basis. Keeping MARTA shelters cleaned is part of the contract CBS Advertising has with MARTA - this shelter probably needs to be cleaned daily to keep it presentable and usable for legitimate bus riders.

I guess it's the next best thing to a full-scale redevelopment like the streetscape transformation shown at http://www.sierraclub.org/sprawl/community/transformations/downtown.asp (be sure to click on "next photo" to see the transformation) Seriously, that will be an improvement for that prominent corner.

And another example of what Ponce could become: http://www.sierraclub.org/sprawl/community/transformations/14thst.asp
