In response to several recent reported abduction attempts near Atlanta Public Schools, including at Towns Elementary, Long Middle and Booker T. Washington High, APS has launched a safety campaign targeted toward student walkers and bus riders.

From the school district:

Atlanta Public Schools is aware of reported abduction attempts near multiple school properties. While the attempted abductions have not taken place on school property, when they are reported to the Atlanta Police Department (APD), communication, using several different methods, is sent to students and parents for awareness.

APS continues to work with APD to ensure the safety and security of our students. These incidents provide additional opportunities for our parents to talk to their children about personal safety in general and the importance of being alert for the safety of others. We urge parents, students and staff to call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. We also encourage parents to speak with their children about how to deal with strangers.

Recently, APS made the decision to launch a safety campaign targeted toward student walkers and bus riders. The district plans to distribute robo-calls, send letters to parents including safety tips, and produce radio and television public service announcements.

Also, these safety tips will be posted on the district and school websites and via our social media channels. Additionally, APS and the APD office of Public Affairs will conduct joint media interviews to spread our safety message.
