Athletic Field at Grady Stadium to be Renamed Saturday

New name will honor high school's first African American coach.

On Saturday, the athletic field at Grady Stadium will be renamed in honor of one of the high school's former coaches.

During a Sept. 17 ceremony, the field will be renamed the Eddie S. Henderson Sr. Athletic Field at Grady Stadium. The event begins at 2:30 p.m.

Henderson, who died in 2001, was the first African American in Georgia to complete the requirements of a certified athletic director.

He was Grady's first African American coach and served a number of other positions including principal at the former Archer High School and director of athletics for Atlanta Public Schools.

Several school officials will attend the ceremony including Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll B. Davis Jr. The Henderson family plans to attend the ceremony as well.
