Ex-APS Superintendent's Trial Delayed to August

Ex-Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Beverly Hall's request to have her trial delayed because she is fighting Stage IV breast cancer was granted by a Fulton County Superior Court judge on Monday.

Hall is charged in a racketeering conspiracy in the APS test-cheating case, which was to go to trial in May. But after listening to testimony from Hall’s oncologist, who said that forcing her to stand trial now could put her life at risk, Judge Jerry Baxter decided to push the trial back to August.

Hall was first diagnosed with breast cancer a decade ago, and in late 2011, the cancer reappeared as it spread to other parts of her body, her doctors have said.

According to the court motion, in late 2013, doctors found even further progression of the cancer.

Hall has maintained her innocence, and has insisted she wants her day in court. But not just now, as read more on Monday’s ruling here.

In March 2013, Hall was one of 35 educators (one now deceased) indicted for their roles in a conspiracy to alter Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) scores within the Atlanta Public School system. 

To date, 22 defendants have entered guilty pleas in connection with the cheating scandal. There are thirteen remaining defendants, including Hall, who are set to go to trial.
