Georgia Tech Professor Killed in Florida Cycling Accident

Accident occurred Saturday

CBS Atlanta and the AJC are both reporting that Georgia Tech assistant professor Kurt Lang Frankel was killed in a Florida bicyling accident on Saturday.

Both sources cite Florida Highway Patrol reports that said Frankel was traveling east along U.S. Highway 98 in Walton County when a car struck the rear of his bike. He died a short time later at an area hospital.

Frankel, 33, was an assistant professor of earth and atmospheric sciences at Georgia Tech.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reported that the driver of the Mercedes Benz C240, 19-year-old Alexandra Elise Alford, was headed east in the outside lane when she hit the back of Frankel's bicycle, knocking him from the bike.

Frankel was wearing a helmet when he was hit.

The car's driver was not injured, but she is expected to be charged for causing the accident. Police said alcohol was not a factor.
