Grady High Journalists Rack Up State Honors

A peek around some Midtown school news to use.

The Grady High School journalism program recently brought home a total of 52 awards from the 2012 Georgia Scholastic Press Association Awards Assembly.

Awards included 10 General Excellence awards, four Achievement Awards and 38 individual honors. Read more on The Southerner website.

Congratulations to Grady senior Brianna Fairley, who has been awarded an $85,000 scholarship to Alabama State University in Montgomery, Ala. She has a 3.8 grade-point average and read more about her and the scholarship here.

The Grady JROTC (Army) Program recently celebrated its Annual Awards Day Program. Cadet officers coordinated an impressive ceremony, with the presentation of awards by honored guests, including Grady's Principal, Dr. Vincent Murray, Grady JROTC Sr. Army Instructor Lt. Colonel (USA Ret.) Charles E. Johnson, Atlanta Public Schools Director of Army Instruction, Colonel Holmes and Lt. Colonel Quick, followed by a formal Pass In Review procession of Cadet Battalion Staff, Color Guard and 180 uniformed cadets.

C/CPT Natasha Wilson - 11th grade
C/CPT Tia Borrego - 10th grade
C/SGT Jefferson Martin - 9th grade

SCOTTISH RITE OF FREEMASONRY AWARD:
C/LTC Jewel Battle - 12th grade

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:
C/CPT Jason Lathbury - 12th grade

Distinctions were awarded to Merit 3rd & 4th Year Cadets, Most Improved, DAI Commendations and Leadership Awards. Trophies, badges and awards were presented to members of the Raider Team, Rifle Team, State Drill Competition and Championship Drill Teams.

Graduating senior C/MAJ Nick McFarlin was awarded a full four-year Army National Reserve Scholarship to North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega, Georgia.

In closing remarks, Colonel Holmes congratulated the Grady Knights JROTC Battalion as the unit that sets the standard for Atlanta Public Schools, the "Best of the Best."  In 47 years of Army service, Colonel Holmes said he has "never seen an active duty unit that can perform the way you performed today. Grady HS JROTC is moving beyond 'Good to Great.' We'll need to come up with a new motto."

Volunteers are needed to cover the 10th and 8th street lots. The Senior One-Acts are set for May 4th and 5th at 7 p.m. in the BBT at Grady. The Senior One-Acts are directed by seniors and are part of the culminating coursework in Advanced Drama Projects. Tickets are $10 - that’s six shows for 10 bucks.

After such a successful screening of Dark Days, the Activism Club (sponsored by Mario Herrera) is hosting another screening on May 10 at 3:30 p.m. in the Main Theater. They will be showing The Interrupters (from the director of Hoop Dreams), a film following several members of an organization devoted to patrolling the streets and peacefully intervening in violent situations. The organization employs previously incarcerated and violent citizens of Chicago who realized that they can change their own ways and have moved on to influence others. Accompanying the documentary will be guest speaker Sarah Vitorino, who works with teenagers, women, and currently incarcerated individuals to tell formerly imprisoned women's success stories and inspire success in others. She plans to visit Grady prior to the screening to give a teaser of her presentation.

On the sports scene at GHS, senior Zane Coburn recently won the 800 at the Region 5-AAA meet in 1:53:00, the second-fastest time in Georgia this season.
 
The final Athletic Booster Club Grady Gear merchandise sale of the year will be held on Friday, May 5 from 7:45 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. in the 10th street parking lot. Look for the white van for deal on athletic apparel.

Have a rising ninth grader or know someone who does? Grady’s last spring campus tour is set for Saturday, May 5 at 10 a.m.

The tour begins in the cafeteria and include an overview of Grady and a comprehensive tour of the campus led by Grady teachers and students. The tour last about an hour. To make a reservation for a tour, please send an email to gradynextstep@gmail.com or call the CCC at 404-802-3049 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3:45 pm.
