Grady High School Slips in National, State Rankings

Last year it ranked 19th statewide.

One of the best schools in the nation is right in our own backyard.

But it's not Grady High School, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The Midtown-based Atlanta Public School, which draws students from that neighborhood, as well as Virginia-Highland, Poncey-Highland, Inman Park, Candler Park and Old Fourth Ward, ranked 19th statewide and No. 1,204 in the nation.

But the school tumbled out of ranking contention on both fronts.

To be sure, Grady is among APS' better high schools.

But none of the high schools that comprise APS were ranked nationally or among the state's best schools, including North Atlanta High School, based on the magazine's findings.

The , a public charter in Lawrenceville was ranked the No. 3 best public high school in the nation by the magazine.

The School for the Talented and Gifted in Dallas and BASIS Tuscon in Tuscon, Ariz. ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

U.S. News and World Report used three factors to determine the rankings:

  • Analysts looked at how well students at the schools performed statewide.
  • If less advantaged students (defined as black, Hispanic and low-income) performed better than their peers in the state.
  • The school’s college readiness index based on Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test data.

Like the number one and two schools, GSMST, which also ranked as the state's best high school and No. 2 in the nation for charter schools, scored a perfect 100 for college readiness.
