Project GRAD Atlanta Hosts Film Premier, 'First Generation', at Midtown Art Cinema

On Thursday, the documentary film about being the first in one's family to go to college makes its Georgia debut.

Project GRAD-Atlanta is hosting the Georgia Premier the movie “FIRST GENERATION” at the Midtown Art Cinema – Landmark Theatres this Thursday, May 2nd, at 4:30 p.m.  

Narrated by Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, “FIRST GENERATION” tells the story of four high school students - an inner city athlete, a small town waitress, a Samoan warrior dancer, and the daughter of migrant field workers - who set out to break the cycle of poverty and bring hope to their families and communities by pursuing a college education.

This movie will be making its Georgia premiere and is hosted by Project GRAD Atlanta, a non-profit organization whose mission is to collaborate with the Atlanta Public Schools in order to increase the number of students graduating from high school and college.   

Following the movie there will be a panel discussion, lasting roughly half an hour, with the film’s two producers (a husband and wife team) and three current Project GRAD students, currently enrolled in different Atlanta Public Schools.  The AJC’s Maureen Downey will moderate.

Movie Synopsis
Shot over the course of three years and featuring some of our nation's top educational experts (Richard Kahlenberg, The Century Foundation; J.B. Schramm, College Summit; Dr. Bill Tierney, University of Southern California), this 95-minute documentary explores the problem of college access faced by first generation and low-income students and how their success has major implications for the future of our nation.
