West Midtown Charter School Application Denied

Decision came during Monday's Atlanta Board of Education meeting.

West Midtown won’t have an additional charter high school come the 2011-12 school year, as the Atlanta Board of Education denied an application on Monday from Westside Atlanta Charter School.

The board vote to deny Westside Atlanta’s charter application came on Monday amid speculation of board chairman Khaatim Sherrer El’s resignation.

The board followed APS staff’s determination that Westside lacks a viable educational plan, as well as leadership, governance structures, proper financing as well as sufficient community support.

Westside proponents said the school would be located in metro Atlanta’s 30318 zip code, and serve various Westside communities including Underwood Hills. It would be located near the intersection of West Marietta Street and Marietta Boulevard.

The board also said Westwide is free to reapply for charter school status for 2012-13.
