Rooftop Solar Tour - IKEA at Atlantic Station

IKEA, the world’s biggest furniture seller and leading provider of ready-to-assemble home and office decor, is taking sustainability to a whole new level.

According to a July 2013 GreenBiz.com article, the company now has solar on 39 of its 44 U.S. facilities, totaling close to 38 megawatts of generation.

The Atlanta IKEA store is powered by solar – lots and lots of solar panels. Installed in July of 2012, over 4,000 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels help the Atlanta IKEA store generate clean, renewable energy each day. The 1,034.9 kW PV system spans over 129,400 square feet and covers much of the roof at the IKEA facility near Atlantic Station.

Solar Energy USA had the pleasure of talking renewable energy and corporate sustainability while touring IKEA’s massive solar roof in mid-September of 2013 (click here to see more photos on the Solar Energy USA Facebook page).

According to Deidra Cunningham, head of Public Relations at the Atlanta IKEA location, “The solar energy system was installed over a 3 week period. In an average year it will produce the equivalent energy of powering 122 homes and reducing 977 tons of CO2, which is the same as removing the emissions of 192 cars from the road.”
