Atlanta's roller derby teams take to the rink for their monthly bouts.

This is the real deal. Gone are the days of hair pulling and stage-fighting theatrics.

Local female athletes across the city and the nation have started a revival of the roller derby. A renaissance of sorts.

Each month, two roller derby bouts are held at the off Ponce de Leon Avenue in Midtown.

The July 16 session brought four teams: Dirty South Derby Girls, Apocalypstix and Denim Demons with the Atlanta Rollergirls league, and one team from Wisconsin -- the BrewCity Bruisers.

In the first bout, Dirty South battled back and forth with the Bruisers. The lead changed hands many times between the two teams but the Derby Girls managed to squeeze out a one-point victory in the last two minutes.

For the second bout, the Apocalypstix took an early, commanding lead and never let go. The Denim Demons tried to catch up but couldn't seem to break the Stix's hold on a victory.

There are only two months left in the 2011 season.
