Trio of Tech Hoopsters to Compete in International Basketball Events

Incoming freshman Tjasa Gortnar to play in FIBA U19 World Championship in Chile

Three members of the Georgia Tech women's basketball team will participate in international tournaments for their home countries this summer.

Junior Danielle Hamilton-Carter and sophomore Frida Fogdemark will both play on Swedish teams, while freshman Tjasa Gortnar will suit up for the Slovenian team.

Hamilton-Carter will play in the World University Games from Aug. 14-21 in Shenzhen, China, while Fogdemark will play in the FIBA U20 European Championship Division B from July 8-17 in Ohrid, Macedonia. Gortnar will play in the FIBA U19 World Championships to be held July 21-31 in Chile.

Hamilton-Carter and the Swedish team are in Pool D at the World University Games along with Australia, the Czech Republic and Japan. Sweden will begin play in Shenzhen on Aug. 14 against Australia.

Fogdemark and the Swedish U20 team played 10 games during the month of June preparing for the European Championship and sport a 6-4 record. Sweden is in Group A in Ohrid along with Portugal, Bulgaria, Hungary and the host Macedonia. 

Sweden was victorious in their most recent game, blowing out Macedonia 87-47 on July 12.

Gortnar averaged 16.5 points per game and seven rebounds a contest in the 2010 U18 European Championship as Slovenia qualified for the FIBA U19 World Championship for the first time. She shot 48 percent from the field during the tournament and scored in double digits six times, including two 20-plus point performances. Gortnar posted a double-double against Belgium with 22 points and 12 rebounds, and followed that up with 23 points and nine boards against Russia in the next outing.
