Are You Taking Advantage of the Longest Day of the Year?

Summer's here and check this out to learn about the summer solstice.

The longest day of the year is today and thank goodness it falls on a Friday! Can you imagine if it was a Monday? Talk about bummer summer blues.

The summer solstice happens when Earth's axis is the most tilted toward the sun and it signals the beginning of the astronomical summer in the northern hemisphere. It also brings with it the longest daylight period for 2013.

According to the National Weather Service, Anchorage, Alaska, will receive 19 hours and 21 minutes of daylight today, while some spots in the most northern regions of the world will get as much as 24 hours of ole King Sol.

And it’s not the only celestial event of note this weekend as the brightest moon of the year comes with the arrival of the 2013 supermoon, which is set to peak June 22-23.

But back to today - the longest day of the year. Of course there are no more than 24 hours that separate June 20 and June 22, 2013. It's the sunlight that counts.

You can revel in the holiday nearby at a summer solstice celebration Friday in Roswell or Saturday afternoon in Southwest Atlanta.

Or maybe you’d like to use the extra daylight to work. In ancient days, the peeps used the solstice to plant and harvest crops. It was also a traditional time to get married, which is a different type of work in itself.

But maybe you just like to play. A good spot for such today would be in Midtown at STK, where from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., guests are invited to join Thrillist for a special happy hour celebration in the lounge featuring complimentary 1075 Club signature cocktails and delicious bar bites.

The opportunities are endless on the longest day of the year!
