'Pre-Peachtree Road Race' Being Held Saturday

About 300-400 people will be given the chance to run the same course being utilized on July 4 for the 2012 AJC Peachtree Road Race.

As you drive through Midtown Saturday, you will see a familiar sight — a swarm of people running down Peachtree Road hoping to be the first to finish the big race. Don't worry, though, you didn't write the date of the 2012 AJC Peachtree Roadrace wrong in your calendar. The event taking place tomorrow will be the In-Training Peachtree Program presented by . 

Approximately 300-400 members and coaches of the In-Training team began training for the  for the road race in late April and will culminate the day of the July 4 road race. Tomorrow, June 23, beginning at 7:30 a.m., members of the program will have the opportunity to test their training skills as they run a "pre-Peachtree" along the same race day course.

The starting line for the truing course, just as it will be on race day, is on Peachtree Road at . The finish line for the 10K ends at Piedmont Park – 10th Street/Charles Allen.

Representatives for the training event stress that traffic will not be affected as the runners will stay off of the streets and that the public is welcome to attend and cheer the runners on.

The AJC Peachtree Road Race is a 10K event that takes place every Fourth of July in Atlanta, Georgia. The first Peachtree was held in 1970 and featured 110 runners. The AJC Peachtree Road Race is now the largest 10K running event in the world with 60,000 participants.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution recently released a map showing the top participating zip codes in the metro area.

The Atlanta Track Club (ATC) is a nonprofit organization established to inspire and engage the community to achieve health and fitness through running. With more than 16,000 members, the ATC is the second largest running organization in the United States. In addition to the AJC Peachtree Road Race, the largest 10K running event in the world, the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay, and the Atlanta Half Marathon and Thanksgiving Day 5K, the Atlanta Track Club directs more than 25 running events per year.

Through the support of its members and volunteers, the Atlanta Track Club also maintains a number of community initiatives including organizing and promoting the Kilometer Kids youth running program to metro Atlanta youth, honoring high school cross country and track and field athletes through the ATC’s All-Metro Banquets and supporting the Grady Bicycle EMT program.
