Previewing the Red Bull Soapbox Race

The Red Bull Soapbox Race thunders into Piedmont Park on June 9. Here's an early look at some of the teams and information about street closings for the event.

The Red Bull Soapbox Race is coming back to on June 9 after a . As the teams enter the final stretches of preparation, assembly and testing for their hot rods, here's a preview of some of the more unique entries. Pretty much all of them have an interesting, creative design, though, so to see all of them, go here.

A Very Prima Wedding

This soapbox is designed to look like a candy pink car driven by a newlywed couple, festooned with flowers and ribbons, Red Bull cans tied to the back bumper. They even plan to hand out pretend wedding invitations filled with little goodies to race spectators.

Beef Brisket Mafia Presents: Just Visiting

The elaborate design for this soapbox depicts the silver car piece from Monopoly being driven by a fellow dressed in stripey jail attire and bursting out of the Jail spot on the game board. There are other game pieces and Monopoly dollars flying around and a little Red Bull can adorned with wings.

Chic Racers

This will be an interesting one to see: this soapbox is actually made of two bikes attached and used as the basis for creating two giant pink high heel shoes. The shoes will emerge from a giant pink box at the starting line and, when in motion, it should look like the shoes are running. Seriously!

CHiPs

There are derby veterans and engineers on this team—it's easy to tell because of how detailed their designs are. This year, their soapbox is going to be modeled after the classic motorcycles ridden by the stars of 1970s Erik Estrada cop show “CHiPs.”

SweetWater

Atlanta-based SweetWater Brewery is represented by a soapbox shaped like a trout, the animal seen in many SweetWater logos. Their blueprints also show the driver wearing a helmet adorned with a big fin. Here's hoping that makes the final design!

Team Publix

This team is made up of Publix truck drivers who have served customers going where shopping is a pleasure for 97 years combined. Perhaps working with what they know best, their soapbox design looks like a green and white Publix delivery truck.

The Prezidents of the United States of America

A lot of the guys on this team kind of look like presidents, especially Kevin McCue. Inspired by that, and the 2012 election, they've decided to craft a soapbox that looks like the presidential limousine. I have a feeling they'll probably be dressed in fancy suits on race day, too.

The Truly Tremendous Tech Tower T

In this team of Georgia Tech alumni, what better to model their soapbox after than the famous T on Tech Tower? It's a very tight, skinny design, though, so the driver is going to be in pretty close quarters.

The Red Bull Soapbox Race will start at high noon on June 9, although pits open at 10 a.m. It will be held at Piedmont Park on 10th Street. For more information, click here or follow them on Twitter.

Please note the street closing plans for this event. Red Bull will begin setting up the event infrastructure on June 4 and set up message signs to inform drivers of the road closures on May 30.

Street closings begin on June 7 at 9:30 a.m., when the street parking lanes on the east and west sides of Charles Allen Drive close between Eighth and 10th Street.

Then on June 8 beginning at 9:30 a.m., 10th Street will start closing in gradual stages. First, it will shut down between Charles Allen Drive and Myrtle Street after morning rush hour. The north side lane from Monroe Drive to Charles Allen Drive will close at that time too. 10th Street from Myrtle Street to Monroe Drive will close after evening rush hour at about 7:30 p.m.

These streets will be closed to everyone except residential traffic on June 9:

  • Argonne Avenue between Eighth and 10th Street
  • Taft Avenue between Eighth and 10th Street
  • Charles Allen Drive between Eighth and 10th Street
  • Ninth Street between Myrtle Street and Charles Allen Drive

Anyone who cannot access their driveways during this time may park at the teachers' parking lot for Grady High School on Eighth Street.

All streets should reopen by June 10 at noon.
