Long-time LogistiCare Employee Appointed to Florida Independent Living Council

A long-time advocate for independent living has been re-appointed to the Florida Independent Living Council (FILC) by Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

Jesus Garcia, 49, a Hialeah resident, is a 15-year veteran of Atlanta-based LogistiCare, the nation’s largest provider of non-emergency transportation management. Garcia’s three-year appointment to the FILC expires June 30, 2016.

The FILC is a statewide council established by both federal and Florida law, and all 15 of its voting members are appointed by the state’s governor. The organization is responsible for developing a state plan for independent living, works to help residents with disabilities find suitable places to live and advocates on behalf of independent living programs.

“The Florida Independent Living Council has helped raise the standard of living for Floridians through its tireless dedication to helping those with disabilities find quality places they can live on their own,” said Garcia, who is completely blind. “I am looking forward to helping as many Floridians as possible live independently.”

Garcia, who graduated from Florida State University in 1986 with degrees in business administration and computer science, previously served on the council from 2009 until 2012. The FILC holds public forums four times per year at different locations throughout the state.

“Jesus Garcia’s important work with the Florida Independent Living Council makes all of his colleagues proud,” said Herman Schwarz, LogistiCare CEO. “His consistently excellent performance as a customer care manager and his own personal story make him uniquely qualified to serve the state’s disabled population.”
