BeltLine, Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper win grants

Both organizations win $25K grants in Southwest Airlines sponsored contest.

Congratulations to the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership and Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper (UCR), which both scored $25,000 “LUV grants’’ as part of a contest sponsored by Southwest Airlines.

The contest featured Georgia-based organizations who “LUV’’ their communities. Each organization submitted a promotional video (filmed exclusively – as required by Southwest Airlines – with a flip cam, iPhones, and personal video devices) speaking to the theme, “How we show our love for our community.”

The six overall winners were selected by fan voting, and the Atlanta BeltLine and UCR groups were the two in the annual budget between $1 million and $5 million category.

UCR won based on an essay that explained the need to fund its “floating classroom,” the only one of its kind in Georgia, and which takes area youth on a 40-foot catamaran on Lake Lanier to learn about the Chattahoochee watershed in particular.

The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership won based on its Adopt-the-Atlanta BeltLine, which provides an opportunity for community groups to play a direct role in improving and maintaining the Atlanta BeltLine.

The BeltLine funds will be used for the Adopt the Atlanta BeltLine program and to take ownership of interim urban hiking trails and keep them clean. This program is where community organizations and businesses can adopt quarter-mile segments of the corridor. Only three spots remain at the time of this posting.
