By Jason Fasi

located in the Midtown Promenade was abuzz this past Wednesday night when Ruby Redd, drag queen host of Birdcage Bingo, presented local charity Lost-n-Found Youth with a check representing the largest monthly fundraising total in the event’s history. The monthly total of $2,106 shattered the event’s previous monthly fundraising record of $1,400.

Each month, Ruby and her band of drag queens perform for Mellow Mushroom diners, and tips to the performers are donated to the month’s charity. In May, the adult-oriented event collected a record amount of tips for the benefit of Lost-n-Found, an Atlanta-based charity providing shelter and support to homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.

Ray Matheson—Ruby Redd without the makeup—explained why the event was so successful at fundraising for Lost-n-Found Youth. “The organization is something everyone can get behind and support. Whether you’re gay or straight, nobody can deny the importance of helping homeless youth.”

Founded in 2011, Lost-n-Found Youth provides temporary housing, job search assistance and counseling, and many other services for LGBT youths aged 18-25 who are homeless or facing imminent homelessness.

“Our youth clients, our volunteers and our board are incredibly grateful for the support of Ruby Redd, the Birdcage Bingo performers, and Mellow Mushroom,” said Paul Swicord, board member and treasurer for Lost-n-Found Youth. “Our rent, utilities, and other monthly expenses total some $4,500 per month. We are very thankful for what is a significant donation for Lost-n-Found.”

Ruby Redd Birdcage Bingo is held at Mellow Mushroom’s midtown location every Wednesday at 8 p.m. Each month, diners join Ruby Redd and her drag queen troupe for bingo, drag performances, and pizza. Bingo is free to play with Mellow Mushroom providing prizes. Tips to the drag performers go to the month’s charity.
