Midtown Rotary Club Names Volunteer of the Year

Civic association honors Walter Bradley of AID Atlanta for his volunteer efforts.

The Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club on Tuesday honored one of the city's most visible HIV/AIDS volunteer activists, Walter Bradley.

On April 12, Bradley was named the club's 2011 Barbara B. Rose Volunteer of the Year. Bradley volunteers with AID Atlanta, a nonprofit organization that provides education and support for people living with HIV and AIDS.

“Our selection committee faced a very difficult decision in choosing this year’s winner, but there is no doubt Walter is deserving of this high honor," Club President Robert Walker said in a release. "We can’t thank him enough for his service to the community.”

AID Atlanta calls Bradley “a force of nature," said the release.

Bradley is the organization's most active speaker in the Youth HIV/AIDS Education Program. He travels the state to share about his experience overcoming substance abuse and HIV/AIDs. Last year alone, Bradley spoke to almost 18,000 junior and high school students.

Bradley also helps newly diagnosed people cope with their diagnosis as a peer counselor and support group facilitator. He serves on the board of AID Atlanta, as well as the board of the Living Room

“Walter’s greatest strength is his ability to connect deeply with people from every walk of life, young and old,” Tracy Elliott, executive director of AID Atlanta, said in a release.

“Walter has committed his life, in spite of the challenges he faces, to service to humanity. With his ever‐present smile and amazingly positive outlook on life, he spreads a message of hope to those affected by and at risk for HIV/AIDS," Elliott said.

The Rotary Club awarded Bradley with $500 and donated $1,000 to AID Atlanta on his behalf.
