Hands on Atlanta, a nonprofit organization that mobilizes volunteers to places in need, is asking people to volunteer Sept. 8 to 11.
National organizers want to make Sept. 11, 2011 "the largest day of service in our country’s history," according to event spokeswoman Lindsey Kusiel.

People are invited to attend a Sept. 9 panel discussion called Civic Action in Times of Disaster. The event will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the Woodruff Arts Center.
