APS: Students, Staff to 'Shelter in Place' at Schools

Residents urged to stay off roads until conditions improve.

By Patch Staff

UPDATE: Jan. 29 at 5 A.M.:

According to last update from Atlanta Public Schools, there were still seven students making their way home on APS buses. All APS schools and administrative offices are closed Wednesday, January 29, 2014. All scheduled APS events and activities will be rescheduled. Only essential personnel are expected to report this morning.

UPDATE 10 P.M.:

The Atlanta Public Schools system has decided to have any student or staff member still at one of its schools "shelter in place" – that is, stay at the school for the rest of the night.

If your child already is on a bus, expect them to get home... eventually.

One APS mother called Patch editor Bob Pepalis at 9 p.m. Tuesday and said her daughter still wasn't home. And at 10 p.m., after 6.5 hours on the bus, she still had no idea when her daughter would get home, or if she would have to go pick her up at a school that is miles away from her home.

Making it even more difficult for her was that side roads off Old Atlanta National have not been treated, so she isn't sure she can get to another location.

APS kids and staff were expected to stay overnight at E. Rivers Elementary School in Buckhead, with other APS students and staff staying overnight at North Atlanta High School.

UPDATE: 3 P.M.

All scheduled APS events, including extra-curricular activities, will be rescheduled. Please continue to check the district’s website, social media channels, and local media outlets for updates.

ORIGINAL POST

As a winter storm bears down on the metro Atlanta area, Atlanta Public Schools officials aren’t taking any chances Tuesday afternoon.

Posted from its Twitter account, APS has canceled all Tuesday after-school activities, athletic events and community meetings.

Check back with Patch as we follow the forecasts for this immediate area and how it affects schools, businesses and road conditions.

The National Weather Service forecast says to expect snow in metro Atlanta after 11 a.m., with 1-2 inches possible. Snow is likely tonight before 1 a.m., but with less than an inch of accumulation. By Saturday when the high is 60, there won't even be a trace of today's storm.
