Warm Winter Solstice Arrives, But Will Christmas Be Cold?

This tool can help you plan Atlanta winter break activities with the kids.

The winter solstice arrives around noon on Saturday about the time Atlanta will see temperatures in the mid-60s and climbing.

Temps could reach the low 70s Saturday with rain in the forecast both weekend days, especially during the morning hours on Sunday.

The warm weather will continue that day with high temps again in the 70s, but look for cooler conditions beginning Monday and temperatures could dip into the 20s by Christmas Eve.

The winter solstice marks the point in earth’s orbit when the North Pole tilts furthest from the sun. It’s when the sun appears to stop moving south and begin moving north. The word solstice comes from combining the Latin words for sun (sol) and stop (stit).

This article from Space.com offers a more complete explanation of the astronomy behind the solstice.
