Historic Rhodes Theatre Opens This Weekend Only for an Innovative Arts Partnership

The building, located in midtown Atlanta between Peachtree and Spring streets, opened 75 years ago as part of Atlanta's first shopping center, Rhodes Center.

The historic Rhodes Theatre will open for 3 nights in November, thanks to an innovative partnership between glo and Dewberry Capital. 

The building, located in midtown Atlanta between Peachtree and Spring streets, opened 75 years ago as part of Atlanta’s first shopping center, Rhodes Center. The building is still faced with its original Georgia white marble. Rhodes Theatre closed in 1985, ending its own first run with a showing of The Last Picture Show.
 
The Rhodes Theatre’s second act begins November 8 and runs for 3 nights, through November 10, for what glo envisions as “an extraordinary reunion of community to place.” With support from real estate developer John Dewberry and Dewberry Capital, glo will re-vitalize the once-luxurious showplace of cinema will be the destination for the November public event. The Grand Exhibition marks the culmination of The Traveling Show: dance and muralist across the region, a collaboration of glo and Living Walls, the City Speaks, in partnership with the Georgia Public Library service. The Traveling Show is a thrilling public art tour that runs this fall, landing in 6 cities in Georgia.

Supported by 2013 Robert Rauschenberg SEED Grants given to both glo and Living Walls, The Traveling Show embodies Rauschenberg’s fearless, innovative and pattern-breaking experiments.

glo and Living Walls reflect innovative approaches by Atlanta artists working in the public realm, with the ultimate goal of connecting a state. The inaugural collaboration of the two celebrated emerging organizations seeks to provide access to arts and culture as part of the everyday experience. glo and Living Walls will bring their discoveries from The Traveling Show back to Atlanta and to the Historic Rhodes Theatre for 3 days of programming, all free to the public, aimed to showcase the diverse cultural identities of our neighbors across the state. This exhibition will include panelists from the host cities, documentary footage and photo montages that highlight each city’s individual experience and how their unique identities foster a commonality of purpose and creativity within our regional culture. 
 
Dewberry Capital acquired the Rhodes Theatre in 2010. Headquartered in Atlanta, Dewberry is a leading real estate company that focuses on the acquisition, development and management of premier live, work and play assets. It is also the largest private owner of land on or adjoining Peachtree Street, the backbone of Atlanta's business district. 
 
glo was founded in Atlanta in summer 2009 by choreographer Lauri Stallings. With roots in dance, the contemporary performance group marries multiple art forms as a placemaker in Atlanta. Stallings is the recipient of a 2012 Rome Prize and 2009 Benois de la Danse nominee, and a 2011 Bogliasco Fellow, for the work she has developed with glo. Living Walls is a non-profit organization that brings together street artists, academics and the public at large to activate and engage communities. 
 
In addition to the Robert Rauschenberg SEED Grant and Dewberry Capital, The Traveling Show is supported by Georgia Council for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, Possible Futures Foundation, Georgia Public Library service, and the Goat Farm Arts Center.

The programming is free to the public, aimed to showcase the diverse cultural identities of our neighbors across the state. This exhibition will include panelists from the host cities, documentary footage and photo montages that highlight each city’s individual experience and how their unique identities foster a commonality of purpose and creativity within our regional culture.
